Keeping your enemies close……

I have thinking about this often used cliché quite a bit lately. I have seen many people write this recently and in the past. What exactly does this mean?

First we must define the meaning of enemy.

en·e·my( n -m )

n. pl. en·e·mies

1. One who feels hatred toward, intends injury to, or opposes the interests of another; a foe.

2.     a. A hostile power or force, such as a nation.       b. A member or unit of such a force.

3. A group of foes or hostile forces. See Usage Note at collective noun.

4. Something destructive or injurious in its effects: “Art hath an enemy called Ignorance” (Ben Jonson).

adj.    Of, relating to, or being a hostile power or force.

Synonyms: enemy, foe, opponent
These nouns denote one who is hostile to or opposes the purposes or interests of another: betrayed by enemies; a foe of fascism; a political opponent.

I also searched the internet for the meaning of the cliché, “ keep your friends close, your enemies closer”, which is actually an AL PACINO line from one of the Godfather. Yet, people mutter this quote like it’s gospel, like it’s the right thing to do or something!

Now that we know what an enemy is. and where that questionable cliché actually came from,  let’s look at the ramifications of “keeping the enemy close” and ask…. Just HOW close should you be to your enemies, to keep from having to suffer the consequences of such an association?

Is it to YOUR benefit to keep the “enemy” close, the one that attempts to make you, and others you care about look bad?

Do you think that keeping such enemies “close” in some way makes YOU look good, when they continue to slander you and those you claim to care about? Is there REALLY some benefit?

How do you feel about NOT standing up for what’s right and betraying a friend by continuing to keep this “enemy” close?  Are you just “keeping them close” or are you actually consorting with them?

Eventually, it seems that as the enemies you are keeping close, rise in number, you become one of “them” in other’s eyes. How then can you defend your refusing to do the right thing, because you think it’s more important to keep your enemies close?

It’s one thing to keep an “eye” on an enemy, it’s another to associate as if nothing is wrong. To keep such destructive associations condones the enemy’s behavior and send them the message that you have no problem with what they have done.

So with all of this being said, I think that keeping your enemies close is something that we should all really think about before we utter this phrase. Don’t use this as an excuse when you don’t really mean it.

To me, keeping the enemy close simply means to keep a watchful eye, not to continue association as if I agree with them and condone their destructive behavior, because when you do this, you are just as guilty as they are!

What the average person “thinks” this means is actually way off base! Most people, willing or not to admit, are actually using this quote as an excuse to sit on the fence. THAT, my friends is the bottom line here!

So next time someone hurls that pathetic excuse for being two-faced at you, take a step back and think about what they are really trying to tell you, and before YOU decide to use that line on others……..

Dont let “keeping your enemies close” make YOU look ”guilty by association”

“JUST SAYIN”

A Personal Note:  We (Jim & Jan) don’t alway recognize those who have less than good intentions right away. When we figure this out, we keep those in question at arm’s length.  We have no problem cutting people out of our lives that are a bad influence, or those we wish not be associated with, due to their moral character. To us, it’s just the right thing to do.

There are a couple of old sayings that we DO hold dear. They come from a very old book called “THE HOLY BIBLE”:

PROVERBS 13:20  (King James Version) He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

1 CORINTHIANS  15:33 (International Standard Version) Stop being deceived: “Wicked friends lead to evil ends”

In both our personal and business lives, we find that holding to our moral standards is what’s best for us. Setting a good example for others kinda just happens all by itself when you practice good morals!

Reflecting upon 2011

What a great year 2011 has been!

It began with getting the title to our truck, a great new paint job and a new opportunity at JB HUNT!

We have been blessed to meet so many people and make lots of friends. We have been touched by many and hopefully touched others as well.

Sharing our experiences on several social media sites has brought us enlightenment as well as frustration but it has, in the end been a great year!

We would like to thank each and every one of you for all you have done to make this year such a memorable one!

The Keystruckers are looking forward to new and better things in 2012. There are people to meet, places to go and things to accomplish!

Thanks again and God Bless you ALL

Have a SAFE and prosperous 2012

It was the night before Christmas and all through the truck stop,

Truckers were wishing their load they could drop

They were all snug and sound and asleep in their racks,

Most of em were snoring cuz they slept on their backs.

Their engines were off and their stacks all set high,

In hope that St. Nicholas would soon be by.

They were wanting  St. Nick to bring them a load home tomorrow,

To offset their loneliness and ease all their sorrow.

Through snow and sleet and all sorts of stuff

A trucker does truck and they have to be tough,

Thier gone all the time and they are hardly at home

Across this great country they all have to roam.

So St. Nicholas please keep us truckers in mind

And on christmas day, our families we find.

Wishing all our trucking families a safe journey home for the holidays,

Jim and Jan McCarter

This program is designed to lower your operating costs and maximize your profits.  J.B. Hunt is the undisputed industry leader in the intermodal market and the number one choice for owner operators.

Your operating costs are lowered by using the various tools/benefits at your disposal.  They include:

1. J.B. Hunts fuel program.  They let you buy fuel at their costs with no mark-up.  If you stick to the fuel plan this can put a lot of money back in your pocket.  If you run 100,00 miles a year you will burn approximately 14,000 gallons of diesel.  If you save an average of .30 per gallon then you can put 4,285.00 back in your pocket. This saving is calculated at 7 m.p.g.

2. E-Z pass.  This is a pre-paid toll pass that lets you run the toll roads. There is no cost to you and it’s provided by J.B. Hunt.  This will help maximize your profits by getting you there quicker and more efficiently without having to pay cash, send in a receipt or take a non-tolled state highway or interstate. J.B.Hunt will also offers paid scales.

3.  Discount insurance.  No one can quite offer the discount on your weekly bobtail and operating insurance like J.B. Hunt can.  Their volume discount is un-matched anywhere else.

4.  Base plate.  J.B. Hunt will provide a base plate and permits to cover your operating area.  This benefit saves you around 2,200 per year.

5.  Fuel tax reporting.  J.B. Hunt keeps an escrow of .01 cpm and files your fuel tax quarterly saving you the hassle, time and expense of doing it yourself.

6.  Discount tires and maintenance.  J.B.Hunt has some of the best “network” repair and tire providers that will save you hundreds per year on repairs and maintenance.  They will also keep a maintenance account for you if you so choose.

7.  Preloaded at the rail.  No waiting for a chassis or rail maintenance to fix your chassis.  With a unit ready to go out when you get to the rail yard, it’s a simple drop and hook or just a hook.  In and out times at the rail yards are very short when you run with J.B. Hunt.

8.  Clear and concise directions to your customer and set appointment times. About 70% of all loads are drop and hook as soon as you can get it there.  If you are ever live loaded or unloaded your time will be compensated accordingly.

9.  Roadservice.:  With the other guys a blown tire can take a while. A simple phone call to J.B.Hunts roadservice team quickly gets you rolling again with a huge network of tire shops.

10. The most containers of any company.  With a wide and diverse bank of customers and enough containers to handle them, J.B.Hunt keeps their customers freight moving quickly and efficiently.

11.  Truck Utilization.  As a power unit owner/operator you can expect to have all the work you can handle. No sitting at a truck stop waiting for a load.  With some of the best load planners and dispatchers in the business you will keep moving.

12.  Home time.  We all know that being out on the road costs money. J.B.Hunt will get you home for your 34hr or your 48 hr break.

13.  Same rate loaded, empty and bobtail on dispatched miles plus fuel surcharge..  If you drop an entire unit at a customer and are dispatched back to the rail you get the loaded + f.s.c. rate.  No running around on your dime anymore.

14.  Performance bonus.  Run all dispatched loads with no safety issues for 30 days and add .05 cents to your monthly revenue.

15.  CSA rating.  Working for a company that keeps it’s equipment in top-notch shape keeps you out of the scale houses.  Their focus on safety and compliance keeps their rating well within the limits.  This keeps you running and keeps you safer.

16. Health Coverage.  J.B.Hunt offers affordable health and dental coverage for you and your family if you so choose to their owner operators.

As you can see, there are many great benefits to leasing on to J.B.Hunt.  All they require from you is a good m.v.r., good verifiable  driving/employment  history, clean criminal background and a class 8  truck (any age) that will pass a D.O.T. inspection and a paid 2290.

To apply for this top-notch opportunity call our recruiting office @ 866-314-5397. Or to talk to me personally you can call me on my cell at 918-381-3590. I am an O/O at J.B.Hunt and can give you first hand information from driver to driver.

We all get a little free time on our hands every now and then. We all have different things we try to get done during this free time. Many of us chose to make the best of it while others use this time to shout from the roof tops, just how miserable they are.

Well, I personally have found that using the extra time to listen to those who need an ear can be very fulfilling. Spreading the word about important issues like Truckers Against Trafficking is another thing we like to do. It’s all about improving morale and trying to make a difference.  After all, we run into people every day that are depressed, lonely and misinformed through no fault of their own. Sometimes all they need is some helpful information and an ear to bend.

Then there are the people we run into that are not part of trucking but may need someone to talk to. There’s the nursing home with people who may have never had a visitor that would love a hug or the kids running around the motel you might be staying in for the night that would love a coloring book and some crayons because their parents have fallen on hard times.

Why, you may ask should we and do we take the time to do these thing? Well, for one thing, it feels good. Making others smile gives us such a great feeling.

There’s a catch though!! You must never expect recognition for these good deeds. Ulterior motives behind your kindness won’t give you the same feeling of satisfaction as just giving to give! You WILL, however face others that will always be wondering in the back of their mind, just what it is you stand to gain by your actions. IGNORE THEM….. No matter what your religious background, you will get great satisfaction, mentally and spiritually from being a loving and giving person!

As truckers, traveling around the country, day after day, there are so many things we can do and say that will forever touch someone. Yes, there are quite a few problems with our industry but there are many problems all around as well. If we focus only on ourselves, we may miss an opportunity that could positively affect us for life!

When we meet people who ask us about our life on the road, I ask them how much time they have! The reason is because through the years we have figured out on our own just how to make this life on the road a fulfilling one. From talking to new drivers to listening to the stories of old timers, we never get tired of the people we meet. Yes, we have run into a few that for one reason or another, we no longer associate with but this could happen in any industry. So in other words, I’m not saying that you have to remain friends with everyone you meet because sometimes personalities can clash, so it’s ok to pick and choose.

Many people consider us advocates for the industry. I guess we are but there’s more to it than that. We do not focus on particular issues or causes. What we do is try to gather accurate information to pass along to others who can use it. We try to set a good example so that when Non truckers meet us, they leave with a good feeling about truckers, rather than the more popular view that truckers are, well, you know what I mean!

So anyway, I guess my message here is for those of you who find yourself bored, unsatisfied or even angry about your own situation, find a way to make someone else smile. Whether it be another trucker or visiting the local nursing home or hospital, there’s always going to be some out there that would be happy to get a smile, a funny story and even a hug!

Do something to make a difference!

Give of yourself!

GOD Bless you ALL

The BIG Picture!

The BIG picture can vary from one person to another. Everyone sees it in their own way!

I wonder what the big picture was to J. B. Hunt when he first started out?

Many people are entering the Wonderful World of Trucking each and every day! Some see becoming a truck driver as their last resort to get a job. Others look at becoming a trucker as a step to bigger and better things!

With the explosion of social media, support is out there, no matter what the reason. This is something we didn’t have when we began the adventure! We didn’t have the connections we have now to be able to compare and make an informed decision.

Today, we have watchdog groups, blogs, a variety of trucking magazines, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube, and the list goes on! Sometimes the information is contradictory from one source to another and can get rather confusing at times. We even have had a flood of self-proclaimed “experts” pop up, here and there and radio shows too! One thing is for sure. If you need info about trucking, it’s out here! It may not always be reliable or the complete truth, but at least there’s enough of it that you can compare, sift through the bull, and try to figure it out.

SO here’s a scenario! The  corporate guy (or gal) loses his job due to budget cuts or whatever. He sees the many ads about the endless opportunities in trucking. He goes to CDL school and becomes a trucker. You may feel sorry for this guy but, look at the BIG picture here!If he has the right attitude, he’s going to become a PERFECT candidate to move up the ladder. He may be starting at the bottom but  just might be the next V.P. of XYZ company!

You see there are many ways of looking at most situations. Honestly when I first started trucking, I hated it. I felt like a bum, mostly because that’s how I was treated. When I decided to pick myself up and get my positive attitude back, I began to see things much differently. I saw opportunities that my closed mind would not allow me to notice.

There are many former truck drivers that have gone on to bigger and better things. The things you see and the people you meet can open so many doors if you allow it. You just never know who you’ll run into out here or what opportunities may come your way.

So no matter what your situation, make the very best of it every day. Try to see what the BIG PICTURE could be for YOU.

Your dreams can’t come true if you don’t allow yourself to dream!

Jan
