Lately, there has been so much “talk” about what’s considered “fit” for the road. Many new regulations are being proposed in regards to driver health. Nothing has changed yet, but there’s “talk” of big changes that could effect our eligibility to drive a truck.
When is all this supposed to happen? Who really knows. As we all have seen, the rules or “proposed rules” seem to change quite often. Personally, I don’t see it as a real threat to most of us out here, but there are quite a few drivers who are very upset over some of the rumors.
Health and fitness are an important part of what we do every day. Many of you do not realize this though! There are so many little things we can change now to make the quality of our lives better for tomorrow. The benefits are endless.
Let’s put aside that fact that we may be “required” to be in better health for a moment. Wouldn’t most of you out there like to be in better shape anyway? I don’t know too many people who wouldn’t like to lose at least 5 or 10 pounds.
So rather than sitting around and worrying about it, let’s do something. Start making changes now for YOU. We all want to live longer and have quality to our later years right? So, then the fact that certain things may be required really isn’t so bad when you think about the better quality of life a few changes will bring you.
Jim & I began making these changes long ago when we got a good look at some of the drivers out here that just let themselves go. We have met so many that have had heart attacks, are borderline diabetics, have circulation problems and are extremely obese. Most of these would in fact make changes if they could do it all over again. We often don’t realize how fast unhealthy habits can creep up on us and land us in the emergency room. And what about the drivers that don’t make it to the emergency room? You know, the ones that are found dead in their trucks after days of no movement! Yes that is extreme, but it happens every single day somewhere in this country.
So what can we do?
Be proactive. Take care of the problems now, before they get out of hand. Most of the changes we can make today are common sence changes. Watch what you eat. Get some excessive and go to the doctor when you feel the need instead of ignoring the symptoms. If you are supposed to be on medication, for Petes sake, take it.
Weight management is an important key to your all around health. If you keep your weight at a healthy level, most of the time, everything else falls into place. For those who have the hereditary factor, regular check ups are a must.
We all know how to eat healthy. It had been a subject that has been covered time and time again. everywhere you look, someone is telling you how to do it right. So, maybe it’s time to listen! And excercise really isn’t so hard either. Pictured in this article, are a few of the tools we use. These things are inexpensive and easily stored in the truck. even the stepper fits right behind the seat! Not pictured is Jim’s favorite, “the perfect push up”.
So here’s to YOUR health! t]Take care of it today and reap the benefits for the rest of your life!

Drivers don’t have many choices or opportunities when it comes to being fit and maintaining their health. Everyday some truckstop closes it’s restaurant which probally had some healthy choices and in it’s place opens a fast food restaurant with limited choices.
Not all drivers can cook or would cook in their trucks and the ones that do stop and buy the makings for a sandwich soon get tired of them. It’s a shame that the truckstops have become what they are and their only concern is to make a fast dollar regardless.
Wouldn’t it be nice if the truckstops would put in a gym for the drivers to exercise for an hour or so, run the treadmill or whatever to keep in shape, instead of sitting around eatting, watching television or just talking all night on the cb radio. Most drivers would even pay a small fee to use the gym I’m sure.
Malcolm, You bring up a point that we are very passionate about. A lot of truckstops had those at one time (gyms) but you and i both know a driver can tear up a flat piece of steel. Also, they wern’t getting a lot of use because all of the other supertruckers were belitteling the ones who actually cared about their health.
Thanks,
Jim and Jan..
